The NSPCC Milton Keynes Half Marathon has raised £310,000 in the past 11 years and this year we hope raise a further £50,000. This is a fantastic achievement.
However, we can’t do it without the help of many people – we rely on the support of our fantastic band of volunteers who plan and organise this event every year. We need the support of the generous local businesses and organisations who support us both financially and by donating services and items free of charge. We also need you, the participants, to not only train, prepare for and run the race but then to collect much needed sponsorship to help us raise as much money as possible..
Why do we do this? We do this because we all share a vision where cruelty to children to children does not exist. We want to ensure that every child gets the help that they need and has someone to turn to at difficult times of their lives. We also need to be there for adults to contact us if they have concerns about children and young people.
In the year that ended in March 09, the NSPCC’s ChildLine service received 2488 calls from landlines/payphones in MK postcodes. As this only represents approximately 20% of calls received, we can only speculate how many other calls were made from mobile phones. We are not able to answer all the calls that ChildLine receives at present and we are working hard to raise the funds needed to train more volunteer counsellors and employ more staff to ensure that no call goes unanswered. If you are a child who has plucked up the courage to call the ChildLine service, we must be able to respond to your call.
By taking part in the NSPCC’s Milton Keynes Half Marathon and raising funds to support our work, you are making a real difference to children’s lives so good luck on the day of the race and thank you for your support.
